Gdemo showed the power of G3D, but Gtest showed even more to me personally, you could try making a very small game like that for De3D, since many members might have 28.8 (or even 14.4) and would probably rather d/l 4 megs instead of 24
BTW:I have a 56K, not a 14.4
P.S. I also think this is a good move, keeps away the spammers, plus scammers cannot d/l it when they want it and then sell it for money while they call it their own. Cheap {*BLEEP*}

First, Dean's comment about nothing on the Destiny members site being worth $40 was rude to all the people who work on stuff there. Yes, there isn't a complete engine yet but there is quite a bit of stuff, (individual libraries, graphics, models, etc.) that is more than worth $40.
And, you bet Orf, if someone says that all these people's work to this point is worthless, I most certainly wouldn't NOT work for them. They have no appreciation for any work done unless it is absolutely complete. I suppose your boss doesn't pay you anything until the project is absolutely done, Right?
Dean: You were rude. Do I say your games are crap even if I think so? No. That would be rude.
Anyway, I'm very tired of all of this stuff. My people are working very hard, as am I, and we don't need this stuff anymore. If anyone has a server and would like to host Genesis3D.com, let me know. I will not host it past the end of this year.

I find this thread pretty disturbing. The original statement was that De3D would not be freely available for download that it would be available to members only. Sounds reasonable enough to me. For $45 you get textures, models, a 3d engine, and a forum where the people who built the engine and other people using the engine answer questions and more...
You want a demo before you buy in? Wait. No one said you had to become a member now. Obviously there will be a demo. There will be screen shots and everything else that comes with a 3d engine too.
If you subscribe now you also get to see stuff as it is happening and provide feedback on it. A good example is the Destiny object system. A first version of the object system was provided to the member community and everyone was able to play with it and look at the code and provide feedback on it. You don't often get that kind of opportunity. You shoulda joined the fun on this one, Dean. You obviously have a lot of opinions to offer you mighta been able to help make the object system even better.
If you don't subscribe now then you still can later when you're ready and you still get the 3d engine, the textures, the models, and everything else. You just don't get the early access to the stuff and the ability to provide feedback on developments.
Where is the problem with this deal exactly? The only people who can possibly lose in this deal are those who can't somehow scrape together the $45 that membership costs and if you can't find someway to put that kinda money together over the next few months than I don't understand how you were able to buy VC++ and a modeling package and everything else that you need to use an engine like this.
Funny thing is that so many are complaining about wanting screen shots and demos and blah, blah, blah. I doubt that anyone wants to see a demo of De3D more than Hootie does. After all it is his baby and he has been footing the bill for this stuff for a long time. So stop complaining. The demo will come. So will the screen shots. So will the engine and everything that comes with it. And you can all choose to take part or not.

I just wanted some decent info. It's not too much to ask is it? YOU don't have to put on the upset cut off your nose despite your face thing. But if you mean it I'll get my server together and take it off your hands. Note: If it costs money I don't wanna. But I'd suggest you find an adult because I'm just a teen

This I find even more disturbing. I fully understand that you have no comitment to keep this community going (despite the fact you have done so from your own pocket for the past year or so), but were you planning on telling us this? If what you are saying is true, then you are going to ditch the community (although I dislike that word) in just four days time, giving us just four day's notice at most - if at all. Again I stress that I fully understand you have no comitment to keep the comunity going outside of those members you have weened over to Destiny3D, and that you litteraly owe us nothing but rather vice versa. However, an announcement that you were thinking of shutting up shop, before the holiday period started would have been more decent of you. I would expect many people may not visit the board until after the new year, and then they'll find it has gone with no explanation.

I'll try to see that it gets a proper home but I've personally had enough of this job. Let's see if anyone steps up to the plate. Over all this time I've ran this site plenty of critics have had something to say. Let's see if anyone has the stones to do more than talk.
Yes, it does cost real money BTY2.

When and where did I say nothing on the site for Destiny is worth 40.00
I see me saying I would give 400.00 to help them get to where they had to go.
I said "I have been a member for a while and there has been nothing worth downloading or worth the price of membership. I'm not knocking you guys btw, I know it is hard work and I know something great will come out of it. "
I clearly say I am not knocking anyone or the project and I am not. SO how is that rude? By stating the obvious?
AS for my games sucking, maybe for you they do ...but I like them and that is really all I care aboot. They are fun and some folks who play them think they are fun. if they sell a million or 10 units I could care less./
The team did a great job...so your not knocking me, your knocking the team.

Hootie,
I really hate to see you do this, because you've put so much into it. I don't think anyone has said you haven't. However if you are serious about it I am willing to do my best to keep it alive. I own a couple domains, maintain several. I am sure I could handle it if you'd like me to. Just contact me at Info@ShockingDesigns.com or let me know how to contact you. Please let me know all the details on this site, as I am not sure if there are any legalities I need to worry about.

Notice, the server stats only cover the last few days of each month so you end up having to multiply the numbers by 15 to get an estimate on bandwidth. Do also notice that the high stats are due to RF downloads and that has been changed to be a mirror now instead of the main download site.

Thanks John, Sam et al. And thanks Mark. For a moment there I thought you were just going to pull the plug without much forewarning, and turn this community into another statistic.
Only time will tell how ND get on. I can imagine that this is no easy job.

Don't worry, if this site is dropped by ND, and no one else in the G3D community picks it up, it's gone. Period. WT has washed their hands of G3D. They won't be back (as a supporter of the G3D site) regardless of what Hootie, ND or anyone else does.

While we don't support G3D we still own it and the legal rights to the domain name from what I understand. Alex doesn't like giving away domain names. You're pretty much correct though, if the site is abandoned, I think it is highly unlikely that we would attempt to revive it.

This news has spilled over onto mysite for goodness sakes. Perhaps this is a good thing.
1.If it needs new management someone who has a vested interest in G3D maitence and survival and the where with all ($) to do it sure has perked his head from a long depature.
2.It reminded me that I could post about my 3DS Max question here instead of on the 3DS Max forum where it was too rookie.
Destiny 3D is strong enough to venture out on it's own from Genesis3D. It seems logical sense yall are not supporting it. I can easily maintain Genesis 3D. And breath new life into it's support.
I will announce my canidacy.

If it's up for a vote, I would say let Eric have the job. I think Lightning and jwvanderbeck will be too busy working on Destiny3D and their own games to give the needed attention to the Genesis3D engine and forum.

Everyone becomes busy but you always find time for what is important. If anything, John and I have been running the main things for awhile, just not with full permission. Should something happen and we are unable to run it down the road, we'll look into having you host it Eric, or whoever seems to be a good choice.

What is the size of all the forum's posts ? Is it possible to do a zipped archive, available for download ? Whatever happens, I wouldn't like to lost all the precious data that are in old posts.

The current size is ~36MB for the database. However, if this was dumped out to a file, the size would grow very quickly due to databases saving space by linking records.
I'm unsure if it was this thread or the other one. I may get john to write a script to output files so you have a board replica of the current board and put it on CD. Before that is done, I'll see how much demand there is for it as it would take some time to get the script written to query the database and put the resulting html together. That or a text only version but I'm unsure how such a thing should be layed out.

If it could just be dumped out to plain text or html it would be fine either way. You don't need a built in search capability or anything. I just used "Find in Files" looking for keywords I was interested in on the old cd. Then viewed the file off the cd in my web browser. worked fine.

It would be nice if it was possible to order(for a small fee + shipping/handling) a CD with the board on there. That way ppl could find answers to there questions without going on-line. Because there are lots of info stored on the board.

I'm not saying do it for free.
I think $20 + shipping sounds about right. Seems thats about what the other one was. I think now people should clearly see how possible that this site may be history someday and its worth 20 bucks to have all the bbs history with all its knowlwdge base on cd on your shelf. Otherwise it would be like the lost library of Alexandria. ;(

sorry about that, i didnt take a shot at you directly. I try desperately to stay out of the kiddie tantrums that go on here, but the folks that you want 20 bucks from are the same ones who won't give 40 to see destiny and that made me smile. I should have stayed clear of the conflict instead. <poof> I am gone....

| It would be really excellent to just have a dump of the DB zipped and putted on an FTP server. I've got cable and I can download, whatever the size is.

Couldn't just zip the DB up for people, would need to remove people's password (although hashed) and email addresses, etc. John, I think people are being anxious for a forum copy

| Yeah You're right. It's also that I would like to browse the posts without having to connect to Internet and to wait for search results. I'm willing to install MySQL if I can have it all locally. But I realize that it's one more task when you should have dozens of others that are more important. Sorry to bother you. I was just searching an easy way for you.
